Celebrities including Beyoncé have used this diet. But it's far from the principles of healthy eating, and the results aren't likely to last.

The Lemonade Diet, also called the Master Cleanse, is a liquid-only diet consisting of three things: a lemonade-like beverage, salt-water drink, and herbal laxative tea.

The claim is simple: Give it 10 days (or more) and you’ll drop pounds, "detox" your digestive system, and feel energetic, vital, happy, and healthy. You’ll also curb cravings for unhealthy food.

It all started with Stanley Burroughs’s book, The Master Cleanser. There are many variations, and Peter Glickman continues Burroughs’s legacy with his own book, Lose Weight, Have More Energy and Be Happier in 10 Days, and web site.

Does It Work?

Because you're getting so few calories, you'll probably lose weight. You’ll also be losing muscle, bone, and water. And you're likely to gain the weight right back.

There's no proof that detoxifying leads to long-term weight loss. Plus, you don't need to detox your body -- your liver takes care of that.

For lasting change, you're better off eating a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and lean proteins like fish, skinless chicken or turkey, and healthy fats like olive oil.

What You Can Eat and What You Can't

You're only allowed a salt-water drink, a "lemonade," and an herbal laxative tea for the first 10 days. You can't have any solid food, and you can’t drink alcohol.

After 10 days, you can gradually add back foods, but only a few at first, starting with juice and soup, and leading to raw fruits and vegetables. After this, the plan calls for eating very little meat and no dairy.

Level of Effort: High

You'll likely be hungry on such a strict diet. The web site also says you should expect “detox symptoms” like cravings, tiredness, boredom, and headaches.

Limitations: According to the web site, you must follow the diet exactly or it won’t work and can leave you feeling tired, sick, achy, and with cravings.

Cooking and shopping: You need very few ingredients, and prep work is quick. You can make the drink ahead of time and stash it in the fridge.

Packaged foods or meals: No.

In-person meetings: No.

Does It Allow for Dietary Restrictions or Preferences?

Vegetarians and vegans: Yes.

Low-salt diet: You can swap out the salt-water flush for a cup of herbal laxative tea.

Gluten-free: There is no gluten in the three drinks you're allowed to have on the first 10 days of this diet.

Support: The plan offers free discussion and support groups and an optional online coaching program for $9.95 a month.

If weight loss is your goal, it may work temporarily. Anytime you limit your food intake, especially that drastically, you will lose some weight.

The problem is, you will lose muscle mass. This diet puts you at risk for nutritional deficiencies, too. Also, you will likely gain the weight back really quickly once you start eating normally.

Is It Good for Certain Conditions?

No. It's an unhealthy way to temporarily lose weight.

READ THIS***Ok I’m just befuddled. This is telling you to drink water on water on water and to NOT eat salt and sodium filled foods. When your drinking so much water it causes your electrolytes to go down as well as your sodium. You need to be eating foods with some sodium to keep those levels up or you could suffer from water intoxication, especially if you drink it all at once, which you should NOT be doing at all.

You can always make time. Get up earlier, workout before school and then shower and have breakfast and you’ll have time to get to the high school. Or stay up and workout before bed or right after dinner.

I'm 23, 5'4" and I weigh 198 lbs. I want to lose weight. But nothing seems to be working. I don't eat very much at all. And I work in a lumber yard where I am basically exercising all day. And I still gained 8 pounds in the last 39 days. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

On a side note.

As this supplement also contains iron, it might have a side effect to those who are taking meds for their anemia.

While I don't eat very much. I probably drink atleast 100 ounces of Pepsi a day. And I dont drink much water.

That's why you are not losing any weight. You are drinking your calories. If I calculated right, you are drinking 1250 calories which are, based on your height, is your minimal weight loss caloric limit.

Find a way to replace the Pepsi with water. I'm your height and close to your age, I started about 5lbs above your current weight and now I'm only 22lbs away from my goal weight. I had the same issue with drinking my calories. To get off it, I used Pump flavoured drops to put in my water and it has very little calories. Most of my drinks are now just plain water.

Another way is to buy something like an orange, lemon or other fruit/vegetable, slice a small bit off and put it in your water to let the flavour mix with it.

Not eating enough may be the issue, that or what you eat. Do you have insulin resistance? Do you have a healthy thyroid? Still have your gallbladder? These three factors may be why you're struggling. Also take into account that should you have a lot of muscles due to lots activity - muscle weighs more than fat. If you don't have underlying problems with thyroid, insulin, gallbladder, etc. then look at a Ketogenic diet mixed with intermittent fasting. The best would be to go and see a dietitian or nutritionist.

I have hypothyroidism and a missing gallbladder - apart from that I underwent a back operation and had to drink a lot of cortisone to aid healing infections and inflammation - I packed on 33 pounds in a year and even before that I wasn't at my ideal weight of 165lb (I'm tall as well and originally athletically built) so I ended up weighing in at 250lb and I have around 85lb to lose (already lost 11lb on the paleo intermittent fasting - yay!). I've gone off all the things not on the paleo list.

It's not going to be easy if you have bad habits to break, but in the end choosing healthy is the only way to go.

130 is perfectly healthy for a 13 year old. Especially if you are playing sports because muscle weights a lot more than fat. :)

I've watched a few of your videos and I'm impressed. So i figured maybe you have advise for me. I am a 31 year old female suffering from severe asthma that at one time left me in a coma on life support that was two years ago. Since then I have gained 150 lbs and suffer from multiple problems. My doctor wants me to look into lap band surgery but it scares me so I would really like to loose it on my own. Ive been on very high doses of steriods and in and out of the hospital, I'm carrying alot of water weight. I'm also being considered for a procedure to reduce my asthma at this time im not healthy enough for it. My goal is too loose at least 70 lbs, would love to loose 150 lbs. I am currently 5'9" and weigh 370 lbs.

15 pounds of FAT is not goign away in a day. maybe 15 pounds of water but at your height and weight I doubt you can lose 15 pounds of water in oNe day

For your height, weight, and age, I'd say you are EXACTLY where you are supposed to be! If you feel that you want a flatter stomach, I'd start by eating probiotic yogurt and some cardio. Don't make the mistake of just doing sit ups or crunches. If you do that, you're basically putting muscle under what you consider fat. Then your stomach will actually look larger. I'm sorry but, I don't believe you need to lose any weight! You sound pretty amazing to begin with! Sometimes our stomachs look larger because we are swallowing too much air.
