Most Effective Way to Take an ECA Stack

The ECA stack combines ephedrine, caffeine and aspirin in a predetermined ratio. It causes your body to target specific fat cells to be burned for energy, all the while raising your overall metabolic rate and suppressing appetite. Each ingredient in an ECA stack works in conjunction with the next. Ephedrine works as a beta agonist and stimulates production of norepinephrine, as well as circulating it through adipose tissue by way of increasing cAMP levels. The caffeine and aspirin function to inhibit the body's natural response to halt this cAMP production, thus prolonging the effects. If you want to take an ECA stack, review your medical situation with your health care provider before you begin.

Video of the Day

Compile the necessary ingredients into a series of doses. Ephedrine can be purchased as ephedrine sulfate or ephedrine HCL. Ephedrine sulfate is slightly purer, but either will work. Caffeine is sold in 200 mg tablets, and baby aspirin tablets contain 81 mg. Aspirin is sometimes studied for efficacy in a higher dose, but it can be potentially harmful to consume in large doses, and the difference to the stack is negligible.

Consume ephedrine, caffeine and aspirin doses up to three times a day, and no more than four, in equal intervals. Slowly taper the dose upward as your tolerance increases. Begin at one dose each day, and add in the next dose every two to four days until you reach the full amount. Take the first dose immediately upon waking. Take each subsequent dose on an empty stomach, at least four hours after the previous one. Avoid taking too close to bedtime as it may interfere with sleep.

Repeat this process for up to eight weeks. Do not exceed this time without taking a break, as your body will gradually build up a tolerance to the ECA stack, and it will cease to work. To maximize the effects of ECA for both fat loss and energy, it is advised to take one to two days off each week to allow your receptors to recover and avoid adrenal fatigue.

ECA Stack: Ephedrine, Caffeine and Aspirin

This is an updated form of an article I first wrote years ago. I think you’ll find it informative, but please keep this in mind: I am not a doctor, pharmacist or medical expert. I am not qualified to give medical advice in any shape or form. The ECA stack is a potent stimulant that can be dangerous if abused, taken by someone who cannot tolerate it, or taken under the wrong circumstances.

The first time I ever heard about the ECA stack was back in my college years–the early 90’s. A new bodybuilding magazine called MuscleMedia 2000 came out around that time (published by Bill Phillips). The writers (and the people they interviewed) actually discussed steroids in a straightforward and honest way. I had never seen that before and found it quite refreshing (and surprising). Most of the bodybuilding magazines I read as a teenager gave me the idea that protein shakes were the secret ingredient to 18-inch arms. MuscleMedia 2000 was different: Someone was finally talking about the proverbial elephant in the living room.

One article mentioned a “dirt cheap” fat burner called the the ECA stack.

It is a useful herbal medication for combating infections caused by bacterias and viruses.

I went out to a GNC and asked to buy ephedrine tablets. The lady behind the counter explained I could buy those at any nearby gas station (imagine that–buying “supplements” at your local convenience store).

I bought everything I needed within a few quick trips around town. I tried it and I was immediately impressed. It gave me a nice energy boost and, more importantly, annihilated my appetite. I also noticed that I tended to sweat just a little more (sweat is worthless as far as fat loss goes, but there’s definitely something to the thermogenic properties of the stack). Needless to say an increase in energy/focus and a decrease in appetite are both very helpful when you are trying to drop body fat.

This was around 1993, and most of the over-the-counter “fat burners” from health food stores were fairly worthless (just like today). But it didn’t take long for the supplement companies to jump on the bandwagon. Most of the major supplement brands produced some kind of supplement with ephedra (also called ma huang, the herbal form of ephedrine). But I always preferred the “home made” version because it seemed to be more potent and reliable.

Then there were a few highly publicized heat stroke deaths that were related to the use of these before-mentioned ephedra supplements. The FDA banned all of them, even though the research didn’t really back up their actions (caffeine and ephedrine seem to be well tolerated when used properly). 1

The 90’s ban didn’t affect ephedrine pills that I had always used for the stack. But other legal issues have come into play more recently (more on that a little later).

Let me give you a few simple facts about how this supplement works.

The way ECA works:

Ephedrine and caffeine are both central nervous system stimulants. Combining the two has a synergistic effect. In other words, the two chemicals work together to produce a greater effect than either one would by itself. 2 The results are:

*A decrease in appetite.

*The sparing of muscle tissue.

*Thermogenesis (the creation of heat, which burns additional calories).

The Dosage for the ECA Stack:

The dosage for the stack is 200 mg of caffeine+20 mg of ephedrine. Most ephedrine tablets are 25 mg, so that’s what I’ve always used.

Aspirin is supposed to weaken the body’s natural resistance to the stimulant effects. But I’ve never noticed much difference with or without aspirin, and people I’ve interacted with on forums say the same thing. Most of the research done with aspirin was with extremely obese subjects and probably doesn’t apply to those with less fat to lose. My advice would be to leave it out or to use “baby aspirin” if you insist on taking it (three full-dose aspirins a day are likely to cause gastrointestinal problems).

One other helpful ingredient I should mention is L-Tyrosine.

Two tablets of the supplement were taken by mouth 3 times a day after meals.

It is this unique ability that makes apple cider vinegar a key benefit to losing weight and of healthy living.

Adding somewhere between 1-3 grams with each dose may help enhance the appetite suppression of the stack (especially if taken in a fasted state).

This dosage is taken 2-3 times a day (3x max). The dosages are spread out over 4-6 hours. I would not advise taking it too late (after 3-4 p.m.) as this is likely to give you insomnia.

Where You Can Get/Buy the Components:

As I mentioned, ephedrine used to be very easy to get. But it has gotten more expensive and more difficult to obtain–long gone are the days of grabbing a bottle or two a local convenience store. A few years back you could buy them online, but I’m not sure if that is possible now.

The cost of ephedrine has skyrocketed worldwide (I’m guessing it has something to do with the meth epidemic, since ephedrine or pseudoephedrine is a key ingredient). Here in the USA it seems each state has its own laws: some have no restrictions while buying/selling is completely banned in others (also related to the meth problem).

Anyway, here are the current options I’m aware of:

*You may want to look for Ephedrine HCL tablets at your local drug store. Primatene is one of the brand names I hear.

*Another option is Bronkaid. Bronkaid is Ephedrine Sulfate (not HCL), but most people seem to get comparable results from it.

Your local laws will determine whether or not you can buy either of these (or any other brand).

One word of caution: I’ve noticed that some of the old brands I used to buy have completely removed ephedrine from their formulas while keeping the brand name. The new formula is usually just caffeine with some “proprietary blend.” Read the labels carefully before you buy something online–some companies are using what I consider deceptive marketing practices.

Needless, to say, generic caffeine tablets and aspirin are available anywhere (kind of ironic, considering how much more dangerous aspirin is).

More Information/FAQ

Will I get lean and ripped just from taking this supplement?

Of course not! Most of this drug’s effectiveness comes from the fact that it destroys your appetite. It does help you metabolically, but this is not a “magic bullet.” If you eat more calories than you use, you won’t lose weight. All fat loss is ultimately based on a negative calorie balance.

Once again I need to remind you of something: I’m not a doctor, pharmacist or medical profession. Please talk to your doctor before trying any kind of stimulant.

Needless to say, those with heart problems, thyroid problems, high blood pressure, or those who are pregnant definitely need to stay away from the ECA stack unless your doctor tells you otherwise. There may be other medical conditions which make it unsafe–I’m just naming a few that come to mind.

I would also advice you not to take the EC stack if you are outside all the time during summer months or in hot environments.

Then one of my friends who are also model came to my house.

Remember–this is a thermogenic supplement. I believe the deaths in the 90’s were caused by people taking it and overheating without realizing it. I would not advise you to take any form of ephedra if you are doing some kind of summer training camp, for example.

Recovering addicts should stay away from the stack as it will reactivate their addiction.

If you want to try this I’d recommend you start off with a half dose (100 mg of caffeine and 10 mg of ephedrine) to see how well you tolerate it. Individual tolerance to stimulants varies greatly from person to person, so be careful.

I’ve used the ECA stack as a pre-workout supplement due to the before-mentioned energy boost. Other athletes and bodybuilders have done the same. Just keep in mind that ephedrine is going to be on the list of banned substances in virtually any type of athletic federation. You also have to remember that taking it before a late-night training session will result in insomnia (back to the timing thing).

Do NOT take ephedrine or ephedra and yohimbine at the same time. Do not take any supplement that contains both products. The problem is ephedra/ephedrine works by stimulating beta-receptor sites, and yohimbine works by suppressing alpha-receptor sites. Your heart has both types of receptor sites, so taking both compounds at the same time could be very dangerous (increasing blood pressure, etc). This is one reason I can’t recommend any of the ephedra diet pills I see online–most of them add yohimbine into the mix.

Yohimbine is effective, but you have to know how and when to take it (see: Yohimbine HCL).

No fat loss supplement will “work” unless your diet and exercise plan is in order. Here are a few guides I can recommend if you want to lose fat.

The 4 Week Diet would be good for those who want to do a “crash diet”: those who want to drop weight as quickly as possible.

I think women should consider the Bikini Body Workouts if they are looking for a complete body transformation system.

Older trainees (both men and women) should look into Old School, New Body.

The Beginner’s Guide to the ECA Stack 0

The ECA stack is made up of three components – ephedrine, caffeine, and aspirin. On their own, these three components have very little impact on weight loss – but, when combined together, they form a potent concoction that can speed up the metabolism by as much as 10%, leading to increased fat burn and better dieting results. It’s often used alongside other supplements as a pre-workout to help give you more energy and better performance.

It’s an extremely popular supplement for those looking to speed up their fat loss, and the various effects it has can make the core aspects of weight loss much easier. It will help suppress appetite to make it easier to stick to your food intake goals, it will give you more energy to help push you further with your workouts, and it can increase the amount of fat your body burns while at rest.

This article will examine the supplement, explaining what it does, when it should be used, the potential side effects of ECA use and how much of it should be taken at a time for the best results.

What is ECA?

ECA contains three ingredients – ephedrine, caffeine, and aspirin.

Ephedrine is one of four active ingredients found in the herb ‘ephedra’.

Total charges of nearly $95.00 for a product that has no clinical backing or documented findings for proven weight loss.

It affects the body in two ways: firstly, it causes the body to burn larger amounts of fat for fuel and energy, and secondly, it increases the base temperature of the body, causing a metabolic increase as high as 5% in some people.

Caffeine, an extremely popular stimulant found in drinks like coffee, stimulates and intensifies the effects caused by ephedrine, causing increased amounts of fat burn. The two compounds combine to cause a metabolic increase as high as 10%.

While ephedrine hasn’t been shown to significantly alter the effects of caffeine, the opposite has been shown to be very much true.

Aspirin, the final component, helps prevent blood clotting (a side effect of ephedrine use) while increasing prostaglandin inhibition in the body which, in turn, increases the effectiveness of ephedrine. Many people simply use a combination of ephedrine and caffeine and skip the aspirin, which is fine, but it can be useful to include it.

What Do ECA Fat Burners Do?

The stack causes a massive metabolic increase in the body. Studies have shown that it can cause a metabolic increase as high as 10%, leading to a significant amount of extra fat being burned. One study found that ECA can lead to an extra 1kg/2.2lb of fat being burned per month of dieting –

Additionally it can also act as an appetite suppressant for many people, curbing hunger pangs for long periods of time. Removing those cravings can help with diet compliance, making the core component of weight loss far more straightforward.

Suggested ECA Stack Dosage

The supplement is designed to be taken on 6-8 week cycles with 4 week breaks in between. Dosages should be ramped up slowly over time, eventually reaching 3 a day.

Ideally, one dose should contain 24mg of ephedrine, 200mg of caffeine, and 27mg of aspirin. This means that three would equal 72mg of ephedrine, 600mg of caffeine, and 81mg of aspirin per day. It’s important not to exceed these amounts as side effects like increased blood pressure, heart palpitations, and decreased insulin resistance can occur in rare cases.

If you’re feeling the side effects are a little too strong, cut down the dose until you feel more comfortable and monitor it from there.

When Should It Be Taken?

Ideally it should be taken along with meals, and it should be avoided later in the day as the stimulants can have a negative impact on your sleep. Aim to take your last dose no later than 8 hour before you plan to go to bed. Any later and you may find you have trouble sleeping, and not getting a good night’s rest can have a negative influence on your fat loss.

The stack is useful when dieting/cutting as it causes the metabolism to increase, causing more fat to be burned as energy. Its appetite suppressing effects also make it easier to stick to a diet, which can be useful when working with a particularly strict eating plan.

It is one of the only supplements scientifically proven to aid in weight loss, and it can be a huge advantage for those looking to lose a few pounds of fat in the most efficient way possible.

ECA Stack Side Effects

We’re dealing with a stimulant here, so there’s a number of common side effects which may be experienced when using the supplement.

The main things people are likely to notice are the increased heart rate and energy levels, as well as an increase in focus and concentration.

Based on our research these are the 5 brands that made our top list.

As long as you stay within the recommended dose then this shouldn’t be too overwhelming, and those who exceed the recommended intake should be extremely careful when it comes to high intensity cardio and hydration levels.

Ephedrine has very few side effects, outside of a slight increase in blood pressure and an increase in certain blood parameters such as glucose an insulin. These should subside when you stop taking the supplement.

Caffeine is very well studied and with just about everyone using it there’s a lot of potential side effects which have been documented. The chances of all of them affecting you are slim to none, but there may be a few which you experience initially. The more common side effects include trouble sleeping, increased heartbeat, irritability, nervousness and dizziness, but these can occur in vastly different levels of severity. If you’re a coffee drinker, chances are you’ll not notice a huge difference when taking ECA.

Aspirin can also cause some side effects, but they are rare at low dosages. The more common ones can include indigestion and an increased risk of bleeding, but less than 10% of people taking aspirin are likely to experience any side effects at all.

ECA Stack Results

Like any supplement, you’re not going to get results without a proper diet and exercise routine. When combined with a caloric deficit and regular resistance training, it has been shown to be extremely effective when it comes to improving fat loss.

This study ( shows a significant improvement in weight loss for those given ECA over the placebo group, including one participant who lost 66kg over 13 months.

Alongside the tested results, a quick search online shows hundreds of people who have tried and had success using ECA to help with their fat loss. The increased energy levels make it really easy to get through a workout, the appetite supressing effects make it easier to stick to a diet, and the increase in metabolic rate helps speed up the progress.
