गार्सीनिया का पेड़ भारत में आमतौर पर 6,000 फुट की उंचाई पर पश्चिमी घाट के सदाबहार जंगलों में पाया जाता है। यह छोटे या मध्यम आकार का पेड़ है। इसके अण्डाकार पत्ते गहरे हरे रंग के चमकदार होते है। फल भी अंडाकार तथा व्यास में 2 इंच के होते हैं। फल देखने में छोटे कद्दू जैसे लगते हैं। कच्चे फल हरे तथा पकने पर यह पीले या लाल के रंग के होते हैं तथा बीज 6-8 की संख्या में होते हैं।

गार्सीनिया के सूखे फलों को कोकम की तरह इस्तेमाल किया जाता रहा है। यह खट्टे होते हैं। इसमें विटामिन सी होता है जिससे यह स्कर्वी को दूर करने में लाभकारी है। गार्सीनिया, दक्षिण भारतीय भोजन में प्रयोग किया जाने वाला एक मसाला है। कोचीन और मालाबार में करी को स्वादिष्ट बनाने के लिए इमली या नींबू की जगह, इसके सूखे फल प्रयोग किये जाते हैं। इसे चटनी बनाने तथा फिश करी को बनाने के लिए प्रयोग किया जाता है।
