Garcinia Cambogia: Does This Hyped Weight Loss Supplement Really Work?
Garcinia cambogia (GC) is a small, pumpkin-shaped fruit that grows in Southeast Asia and India. The key active ingredient found in the rind of garcinia cambogia is hydroxycitric acid (HCA), which some research suggests can help certain people lose weight. (1)
Currently, there are at least 14 separate HCA-containing products sold over-the-counter to consumers labeled as “garcinia cambogia.” Most people are drawn to the idea of using GC because of the potential that it can provide near-effortless, quick weight loss without the need to change someone’s overall diet or lifestyle very much.
GC itself is not a new product; in fact, it’s been consumed in parts of Asia for many years, although not for the purpose of losing weight. Since GC (traditionally also known as the Malabar tamarind) first began to gain popularity in the U.S. several years ago — after appearing frequently in the media and on popular health-related TV shows — sales have gone up dramatically. More and more people are purchasing this so-called “weight loss miracle drug” in hopes of losing stubborn body and stomach fat they’ve been struggling with for years.
But just like most other weight-loss supplements, pills and products, studies regarding GC’s effects and safety have been mixed. While there’s some evidence that HCA might be able to aid in weight loss even when someone does not exercise often or change his or her diet very much, there’s also concerns regarding serious side effects that can occur, including liver damage or failure, anxiety, fatigue, dizziness, and digestive problems.
Remember that just because GC is derived from a natural fruit doesn’t mean it’s always completely safe. So is garcinia cambogia ultimately worth trying? What’s the truth with this purported weight-loss supplement? Let’s take a look at how HCA works, in what situations GC might be helpful, and what adverse reactions are possible when using any type of weight loss drug.
Finally, it’s worth considering the fact that time and time again we see various fad diets and products publicized to help boost weight loss — but what really works in the end is living a healthy lifestyle long term.
Does Garcinia Cambogia Work? What the Studies Tell Us
Garcinia cambogia reviews, research results and weight loss testimonials have been mixed to say the least. By far the most well-publicized benefit of using garcinia cambogia is its ability to increase weight loss. Other claims that are commonly made about garcinia cambogia’s effects include:
- loss of appetite or less of a desire to eat than usual
- reduced cravings for unhealthy foods, such as sugar addiction
- a more positive mood (including feeling happier, more energetic and less tired)
- increased energy and concentration
- stabilized blood sugar levels
- improved bowel movements
- reduced joint pains
- improved cholesterol levels
- stronger desire to be physically active
Most of the claims above have not been backed by scientific studies, however some have. Let’s review the benefits of garcinia cambogia that actually have some merit and seem to be effective in some manner.
Some studies have found that garcinia cambogia might, in fact, be able to help with low amounts of fat loss, plus some of the other health concerns mentioned above, although its effectiveness is rarely strong or consistent. For example, research suggests that HCA works by blocking a certain enzyme called adenosine triphosphate-citrate-lyase, which contributes to the formation of fat cells. But studies comparing GC’s effects to controls have found that it might only increase weight loss by a mere one to two pounds on average.
These findings are exactly what researchers published in the Journal of Obesity in 2011. When they compared people who took garcinia cambogia extract to those who didn’t, the weight difference was very small (on average just about two pounds). Plus, it wasn’t even possible to conclude that GC was directly responsible for the additional pounds lost.
The meta-analysis reviewed results from 12 different trails involving GC and revealed a small, statistically significant difference in weight loss favoring use of garcinia cambogia products containing HCA slightly over use of a placebo. However, the analysis also found that some studies showed digestive side effects (“gastrointestinal adverse events”) were twice as common in HCA groups compared with placebo.
Results from various weight loss studies involving GC have been very mixed. One study in the meta-analysis reported a significant decrease in fat mass in the HCA group compared with placebo, two studies reported a significant decrease in visceral fat/subcutaneous fat/total fat areas in the HCA group compared with placebo, but two other studies found no significant difference at all between HCA and placebo. A study that was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that GC used for 12 weeks (1,500 milligrams dosage) “failed to produce significant weight loss and fat mass loss beyond that observed with placebo.” (2)
The conclusion of the meta-analysis regarding garcinia cambogia? Researchers summed up their findings by saying that “the magnitude of the effects are small, and the clinical relevance is uncertain. Future trials should be more rigorous and better reported.” (3) The bottom line is that if you’re struggling to lose weight, GC likely won’t be the answer, according to trial and controlled studies.
Studies have also suggested that it’s possible that HCA found in garcinia cambogia can help lower someone’s appetite by increasing production of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is associated with calm and happy feelings — and therefore, sometimes appetite suppression, less cravings and reduced desire for comfort foods. Animal studies show it might also help increase energy expenditure. (4)
Keep in mind, however, that this isn’t the case with all people, and there are other, potentially less risky ways to better manage your appetite and boost serotonin production (such as eating balanced meals with protein foods and healthy carbs at regular times throughout the day).
There’s some support for garcinia cambogia being able to improve cholesterol levels and lower high triglycerides. It might also be able to help raise HDL “good” cholesterol. It’s not safe for anyone already taking medications that affect cholesterol, however, and its effects don’t seem to be very reliable or strong.
Studies have found that GC has “no significant effect on anthropometric parameters, REE, triglycerides or glucose levels” but might have a small effect on lowering cholesterol. (5) Keep in mind that there are also plenty of other natural ways to improve cholesterol levels, including exercising and eating more dietary fiber from high-fiber foods like veggies, nuts, seeds and beans.
Finally, what about CG’s effects on blood sugar levels?
There is no compelling reason to fuss on the grounds that there are regular supplements which can help you in getting back your delightful bent body.
Some evidence exists showing that garcinia cambogia can help control blood sugar by improving how cells take up glucose (sugar) to be used for energy. One way in which it might improve weight loss is through inhibition of pancreatic alpha amylase enzymes, changes in intestinal alpha glucosidase and alterations in fatty acid synthesis. This might be able to change how carbohydrates are metabolized. (6)
This might possibly help your body respond to insulin better, although it can raise the risk for having low blood sugar levels in some people, too. If you have a history of blood sugar swings, you’re prediabetic, diabetic or taking medications that alter insulin’s effects, GC might make your blood sugar drop dangerously low. While this doesn’t appear to happen in everyone who takes GC, it’s something else to consider and something to discuss with your doctor.
Potential Garcinia Cambogia Side Effects
While some people claim they don’t experience any side effects at all from using GC, others have had very different experiences. Here’s one disturbing account regarding the use of garcinia cambogia extract that you might not have heard about: It’s contributed to at least several patients winding up in the hospital with liver failure and needing emergency liver transplants.
A 2016 article published by the Transplantation Center at the Mayo Clinic reports that millions of Americans regularly use herbal supplements, often in pill form, but aren’t aware of their full effects. Many weight loss drugs pose potential hidden dangers and are “associated with hepatotoxicity and acute liver injury.” (7)
In the case of garcinia cambogia, it can easily be overused and is not very well-regulated. Some manufacturers recommend taking high doses multiple times per day, for example 30 to 60 minutes before every meal for eight to 12 weeks straight. (8) Aside from liver damage, other garcinia cambogia side effects that can occur include:
- becoming fuzzy or weak
- fatigue and brain fog
- skin rashes
- an increase in catching colds/lower immune function
- dry mouth and bad breath
- digestive issues like nausea, trouble eating or diarrhea
Something else to consider about GC is the long list of its potential medical/drug interactions. Many people should avoid garcinia cambogia due to how it can affect other medications, pregnancy, nutrient levels, blood sugar and more. Garcinia cambogia can potentially interact badly with: (9)
- pregnancy and breastfeeding
- existing cases of liver or kidney damage
- medications that are taken to control asthma and allergies
- diabetes medications and insulin
- iron supplements (usually taken by people with anemia)
- pain medications
- medications used to control mental disorders like anxiety and depression
- statin drugs that lower cholesterol
- blood thinning drugs (like warfarin)
How Much Garcinia Cambogia Should You Take?
If you decide that you still want to try taking GC for weight loss or its other benefits, here’s what you need to know about dosage recommendations for products containing HCA:
- Studies using GC have used a wide range of doses, anywhere from one gram to 2.8 grams daily. Typical doses are ususally between 250–1,000 milligrams per day.
- Study durations have also varied widely, ranging from using GC between two to 12 weeks at a time.
- The optimal dose of HCA is currently still unknown. It’s not clear if a higher HCA dosage even means a higher bioavailability of HCA once consumed.
- There does seem to be a significant correlation between the dosage of HCA and body weight loss, meaning higher doses have slightly more effects.
- Garcinia cambogia continues to be the most widely used supplement in studies for providing HCA, however aside from GC, HCA can also be found in supplements made from the plant Hibiscus subdariffa.
- Because most studies have investigated the effects of GC taken for about eight weeks, researchers believe this is ultimately “too short a time to assess the effects of HCA on body weight.”
To err on the safe side, avoid buying garcinia cambogia “formulas” or “supplement blends,” which might fail to report all of the other ingredients included or accurate levels of HCA. Many proprietary formulas are made by manufacturers that only use a fraction of the active ingredient or standard dose to keep costs down. Always read labels and look for the words “pure garcinia cambogia” and “hydroxycitric acid (or HCA) extract” (this should be around 50 percent to 60 percent of the product). If you purchase a blend and see an ingredient listed without an amount, that can be a red flag that you don’t know exactly what you’re getting.
11 Weight Loss Methods That Really Do Work
In just about all studies involving garcinia cambogia, researchers note that it’s hard to tell if any demonstrated benefits (weight loss, reduced cholesterol, etc.) are really due to GC or are actually influenced by other factors like the subjects eating lower-calorie diets or exercising. It’s always possible for any supplement to cause a “placebo effect,” where subjects wind up changing their outlook and habits simply because they believe the product is helping them (even if it isn’t actually doing anything).
Another interesting fact that the Journal of Obesity meta-analsis reports is that most of the included studies “failed to indicate whether or not outcome assessors were blinded, and seven studies did not even specify who funded the garcinia cambogia studies.” While it’s possible that garcinia cambogia might help you lose an additional one to two pounds if you take it regularly, most experts don’t think it’s worth the money or the risk — especially considering its effects are so small and inconsistent.
Ultimately, taking weight loss supplements won’t teach you much about eating an overall healthy diet, finding ways to enjoy exercise, or practicing “intuitive eating” and managing cravings. So what can you do to move in the right direction of losing weight safely? Weight loss efforts should always be realistic, safe and sustainable. Remember that the real goal is to reach a healthy weight and stay there for life. That’s why quick fixes and fad diets have been shown in studies to fail in the long run over 95 percent of the time.
Here are some of my favorite tips for losing weight using reliable methods that really work:
- Get good sleep! A lack of sleep (less than seven to nine hours nightly for most people) can mean a lack of weight loss.
- Eat more fiber: Adults need to aim for at least 25–30 grams daily from things like veggies, fruit, ancient grains, sprouted legumes and seeds.
- Use healthy fats: Coconut oil has natural fat-burning effects just like GC does, plus many more benefits like improving gut health, too.
Heymsfield, who continues to study the topic of weight-loss supplements at Pennington, says that about a dozen negative studies have since been published about garcinia cambogia.
But you shouldn't use it if you're already on a prescription for your cholesterol.
Other healthy fats that can help control your appetite include real olive oil, avocado, fats from grass-fed beef, nuts and seeds.
- Utilize adaptogen herbs: Adaptogen herbs like maca, ginseng and rhodiola can help control health conditions that can make it hard to lose weight (like high amounts of stress, thyroid issues, leaky gut, adrenal fatigue, cellular toxicity and candida).
- Don’t skimp on protein: Protein foods are satisfying and essential for building muscles. Regularly include proteins like cage-free eggs and wild-caught fish in your meals.
- Consume probiotics: Probiotic foods and supplements not only help balance improve digestive health, but they also balance hormones, raise immunity, control your appetite and play a part in weight control.
- Switch up your exercise routine: Try burst-training exercises and other forms of high intensity interval training (HIIT) to keep challenging your muscles, work in with a group, add in weight training, and relax with yoga in between workouts.
- Stand up more during the day: Sitting for long periods of time is associated with being overweight and a higher risk for obesity.
- Sneak more fitness into your day: Take the stairs, do body weight exercises at home. or try wearing a fitness tracker for motivation — try some of these exercise hacks.
- Schedule your workouts ahead of time: This makes it much more likely you’ll follow through.
- Useessential oils for weight loss: Natural oils including grapefruit, cinnamon and ginger oil can help control your appetite, hormones and digestive symptoms.

Spoiler Alert: Garcinia doesn’t work. It doesn’t have human trial studies to back up its weight loss claims. Keep reading and you’ll understand it for yourselves. And that Anna Haughman CNN story is a hoax!
But before that, I really have to share this with you.
Somewhere during my research process on Garcinia, I found out that it has been used as a flavoring agent for fish curries.
Wait a second…fish curries?
I had my aha moment and decided to Google the Tamil/Sinhala name of Garcinia.
And to my surprise, it turns out this sweetypie is what we (Srilankans) call Goroka.
For those interested, Garcinia is called Kudampuli (Pot Tamarind) in Tamil.
And we are those people who traditionally use Garcinia Cambogia to flavor our fish curries.
It’s a staple in every Srilankan kitchen.
Let me tell you this, Garcinia (Goroka) flavored fish curry, also known as Ambul Thiyal is one of the best things Srilankans have discovered.
A picture of Garcinia Cambogia I took from our kitchen cupboard:
Dried fruit version of Garcinia from our kitchen…
What is Garcinia Cambogia and where is it from?
Garcinia Cambogia, also known as Malabar Tamarind, is a pumpkin shaped fruit that originates from south-east Asia and India.
The rind of this sour fruit is used as a traditional flavoring agent for fish curries.
It’s a staple in every Srilankan kitchen cupboard and that’s coming from a Srilankan (Me).
There are claims that Garcinia has been used as a home remedy for bowel problems, intestinal parasites and rheumatism [ 1 ].
As mentioned earlier, Garcinia Cambogia became super famous after Dr. Oz labeled it as the “revolutionary fat buster” in his show.
An Overview of Everything Dr. Oz said about Garcinia Cambogia
He’s the name behind the success of this viral weight loss supplement, so it only makes sense to start off with his claims right?
According to Dr.Oz, Garcinia Cambogia is the:
- “Holy grail” of weight loss.
- “Newest, fastest and least expensive fat buster”.
- “Revolutionary fat buster you’ve been waiting for.”
Let’s go through each claim about Garcinia from Dr.Oz show.
What does Garcinia Cambogia do for you?
These are the exact words of Doctor Julie Chen from Dr.Oz show:
It’s actually been seen in studies to help increase weight loss by 2-3 times, what people would naturally lose with just diet and exercise alone.
See the bolded words above?
Those words are what pretty much sold Garcinia Cambogia on the show.
I mean who wouldn’t like the idea of munching on KFC, sitting on the sofa all day and still lose that stubborn belly fat?
How does Garcinia Cambogia work for weight loss?
According to Dr.Oz, Garcinia cambogia works for weight loss in 2 ways:
- By blocking fat production and converting excess sugar into energy.
- By dealing with emotional eating. This works as an appetite suppressant.
What they repeatedly claimed is that Garcinia inhibits the production of fat in the body.
So if the body is not making fat, it will burn the fat it already has.
They also said that Garcinia Cambogia increases the production of serotonin in your brain.
Serotonin is a compound that helps avoid excess eating by making you feel fuller longer.
How is Garcinia different from all the other weight loss supplements out there?
Were you wondering about that?
Dr.Oz can read your mind because he asked that question to Julie Chen and she said:
Because it suppresses appetite and it helps to prevent fat from being made in the body.
In order to fully utilize garcinia cambogia benefits, you should supplement with the pill form of garcinia cambogia 30 to 60 minutes before meals.
It moves it towards glycogen which is actually an energy source for the muscles to burn when you exercise.
Dr. Oz did a demonstration in which he explains how the liver turns excess sugar into fats.
He showed how Garcinia Cambogia will block the enzyme that turns the sugar into fats.
He explained that Garcinia uncorks the pathway that allows sugar to be converted into energy.
Here is another EPIC comment by Dr.Oz regarding Garcinia:
Your fat cells can begin to shrink out and convert into energy. Now even if you eat sugar, you’re unable because of Garcinia to make more of that fat cell.
That means you can eat your Ice cream, Pizza with double cheese and still get ready to brace the bikini season!
The whole focal point of their discussion is that Garcinia helps burn fat and not the muscle because it converts into energy that helps build muscle.
Other claims made on the Dr.Oz show:
- It doesn’t just help with weight loss, Garcinia also helps with overall body health.
- They saw in studies that patients had a decrease in total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL.
- Improvement in HDL which is a good cholesterol.
- Those studies saw improvements in patients with obesity.

Where is the REAL Evidence to prove these Weight loss claims about Garcinia Cambogia?
I’m yet to find those “studies” talked about in Dr.Oz show.
If anyone gets hold of accurate studies supporting the above claim about Garcinia, please feel free to send me the link.
However, I’ve found a research paper that concludes Garcinia Cambogia works for weight loss in the short term.
It says that the magnitude of the weight loss is so small that it requires more rigorous future trials to draw any serious conclusions [2, 3].
Another research paper has also concluded about the lack of human trial evidence to support the claim about Garcinia Cambogia for weight loss [ 4 , 6 ].
It points out that most studies in humans have been conducted on small samples.
All of those studies have failed to show the long-term effect of Garcinia for weight loss.
Does Garcinia Target Belly Fat?
Now here is an interesting finding.
Earlier we read that there isn’t much evidence to support the claims of weight loss caused by Garcinia Cambogia.
Here are 2 studies stating that Garcinia can help lose visceral fat (belly fat).
The first study was carried out on mice and the second was on humans.
Study 1: This study was carried out on obesity-prone mice.
They were fed with high-fat diet for 16 weeks.
One group was given Garcinia Cambogia every day and another group was a control.
Results: No significant changes in body weight and food intake between both groups of mice.
However, they found out that the group of mice that had Garcinia had a significant reduction in their visceral fat (belly fat) [ 5 ].
Study 2: Double-blind, randomized and placebo-controlled.
This study was carried out on a group of men/women aged 20-65 years.
They all had a visceral (belly) fat area of 90cm or more .
- One group received 1000 mg HCA (Garcinia Cambogia) per day.
- The other group received placebo.
- The treatment was given for 12 weeks.
- After 12 weeks, both groups were given placebo for 4 weeks to assess any rebound effect.
Findings: After 16 weeks, the group that received Garcinia Cambogia had a significant reduction in visceral fat compared to the control group.
They also didn’t see any rebound effect from week 12 to 16 without Garcinia.
Regardless of their gender, both groups that received Garcinia showed belly fat reduction.
Bottom line: The belly fat loss from Garcinia was mentioned in Dr.Oz show and this is probably one of the rare studies out there to support that claim.
There still needs to be more human trial research to draw any serious conclusions.
This is primarily because of some of the rumored side effects of Garcinia.
Let’s Talk About Apple Cider Vinegar for Weightloss!
Apple Cider Vinegar is widely popular for its antifungal, antibacterial, antidiabetic and antioxidant properties [ 7 ].
As for its weight loss properties, here’s what a double-blind trial study found:
Participants: Japanese obese individuals with the same body weight, BMI and waist circumference [ 8 ].
- All participants were divided into 3 groups.
- Each group was given 500 ml of a beverage containing either 15 ml vinegar, 30 ml vinegar or 0 ml vinegar.
- They were given this treatment every single day for 12 weeks.
Results: The study found out that both groups that took the Vinegar beverage had significant weight reduction than the placebo group.
They also noticed more reduction in belly fat.
Bottom line: Apple Cider Vinegar actually has more reliable evidence for weight loss than Garcinia in human trial studies.

Dr. Oz did not recommend any brands and he clearly mentioned that on his show.
2 . Which brand of Garcinia Cambogia is the best?
Although we traditionally use it in our fish curries, Garcinia Cambogia is not something I will be using for weight loss purposes anytime soon.
I’ve done my part to educate you guys about this product for weight loss but I don’t trust it, yet.
My opinions might change in the future if/when there are enough studies to support the claims on humans.
I’m not very satisfied with the before/after pictures and videos I’ve seen so far either.
Therefore I refuse to mention or link out to any Garcinia brands.
While Garcinia Extra had a serving size of two capsules totaling 1000mg, Garcinia plus only had a serving size of 1 capsule totaling 700mg.
What should you look out for when buying Garcinia Cambogia?
- Strictly watch out for online scams. Don’t bother with the free trials from random websites and Facebook pages.
- Look for an FDA approved brand.
- Make sure it has at least 60% Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA) which is the active ingredient.
- And make sure it doesn’t have any fillers.
4 . Is Garcinia Cambogia safe for diabetics and pregnant women?
If you’re diabetic, pregnant or under any serious medications, please consult with your doctor before taking any weight loss supplements.
5 . What are the side effects of taking Garcinia Cambogia?

No further updates or reliable photos whatsoever.
Even many of the comments left on these videos sound so fishy.

As mentioned earlier, Apple Cider Vinegar also lacks much evidence from human trial studies.

How To Take Apple Cider Vinegar For Weight Loss
A Look At Some Of The Many Health Benefits Of ACV
There are quite a number of scientific reasons behind apple cider vinegar’s ability to suppress fat gain more effectively than just eating raw apples.
Science taught us that you need acids to breakdown protein.
Science also taught us that proteins are the building blocks of the growth hormone.
By increasing acid presence in your stomach, you will improve your chances of a thorough digestion and at the same time improve the availability of key hormones in the body.
Benefit #1 – Putting Your Protein to Good Use
Apple cider vinegar stimulates digestion of protein from which we get the growth hormone.
Growth hormone works like jet fuel – it re-awakens your body and gets your metabolism ticking.
You feel energetic and burn more calories even when resting. This is a great health benefit of apple cider vinegar and its exactly how it gets you moving in the right direction.
It also improves digestion, reducing the amount of time food (and particularly fatty food) spends in your digestive tract. If fats remain in your intestines for too long, it goes without saying that more unwanted fat will find its way to the unwanted areas.
Vinegar works from the beginning of your digestive process by stimulating your appetite and increasing your hunger pangs. Normally, you wouldn’t think of this as a good strategy if you are on a weight loss path. But combining the apple cider vinegar diet and Garcinia Cambogia increases your chances of gaining interest in whole foods.
Garcinia generally reduces your cravings for sugars and sweet things – and therefore with a little bit of self-control, partaking of this duo would certainly work positively.
Benefit #2 – Apple Cider Vinegar Is a Fire-Starter
It’s virtually impossible to lose weight if you don’t have the necessary fire in you. And what ignites fire?
Now what the apple cider vinegar weight loss recipe does is that it improves uptake of iron mineral.
Iron is an essential component that carries oxygen to your body cells and binds it there. It is this unique ability that makes apple cider vinegar a key benefit to losing weight and of healthy living.
Moreover, by increasing oxygen utilization in the body it enhances energy consumption which leads to faster breakdown of glucose. The faster glucose is broken down to meet immediate body energy needs, the more calories you burn.
Benefit #3 – A Suppressed Appetite For Sodium
It’s one thing to burn calories; it’s another to control your bodily needs for sodium. As you might be aware, sodium is a key component of the junk food we eat in town. This partly explains why you frequently feel the urge to run to McDonalds to grab a bite.
It’s because your body has an innate demand for sodium ions.
On the flipside though, sodium promotes water retention in the body which again favors weight gain. So you need to find a solution to this.
Either you forego your cravings for junk food or you find a healthy substitute.
Talking about finding a healthy substitute, that’s exactly where Garcinia Cambogia And Apple Cider Vinegar together come in handy.
Both are rich in potassium ions.
Potassium ions can work as a healthy substitute to sodium ions. In fact, try replacing your table salt with Braggs apple cider vinegar. Use it to season foods you would otherwise need to salt.
Benefit #4 – Detoxifying Power
What could happen if you pushed your body to the limits?
Well, most of the time our body operates at below average rates because of toxins which build up over time. The digestive system itself is quite long, and many times if falls prey to common health problems like constipation, indigestion and even diarrhea.
Likewise, your entire body system is long and complicated. We produce toxins through what we eat and drink – and the more toxins you have the more likely you are to gain weight.
Garcinia Cambogia and braggs apple cider vinegar together are both quite useful as cleansing agents.
AVC by itself cleanses the digestive system by binding toxins and guiding them out of your body through feces.
Beyond the digestive tract, a bit of vinegar can go a long way in cleansing your colon, kidneys and liver.
As for Garcinia, the more you take it, the more your blood system is cleansed.
A cleansed system translates to better uptake of nutrients which in turn boosts your metabolism. The goal is to free up your choked up system so that it can resume optimal operations and burn fat faster, naturally.
