GARCINIA Overview Information
Garcinia is a small to medium-sized tree that grows in India and Southeast Asia. The fruit rind contains the chemical hydroxycitric acid (HCA) and is used to make medicine. Don't confuse Garcinia with Garcinia hanburyi (gamboge resin).
How does it work?
Garcinia contains the chemical hydroxycitric acid (HCA). Developing research suggests that HCA might prevent fat storage, control appetite, and increase exercise endurance; however, whether these effects occur in humans is unclear.
GARCINIA Uses & Effectiveness
Insufficient Evidence for:
- Exercise performance. Taking a chemical compound found in Garcinia called hydroxycitric acid (HCA) might increase how long untrained women are able to exercise. However, it does not seem benefit men in the same way.
- Weight loss. Research on the effect of Garcinia on weight loss is inconsistent. Some research shows that taking Garcinia extract that contains 50% hydroxycitric acid (HCA) for 8-12 weeks doesn't decrease fat breakdown or energy expenditure in overweight people. However, other research suggests that it might improve weight loss when taken for 12 weeks. Taking a specific Garcinia product containing 60% HCA (Super CitriMax InterHealth Nutriceuticals) by mouth in three doses daily 30 to 60 minutes before meals for 8 weeks, together with a healthy diet, seems to improve weight loss more than just diet alone. But other research shows that adding this specific Garcinia product to cereal bars or tomato juice and consuming them before lunch and dinner for 2 weeks does not improve weight loss. Reasons for the inconsistent results might be the dose, duration of treatment, or formulation of Garcinia extract that was used.
- Joint pain.

Garcinia is POSSIBLY SAFE for most people when taken by mouth for 12 weeks or less. Long-term safety is unknown. Garcinia can cause nausea, digestive tract discomfort, and headache.

Garcinia cambogia, a tropical fruit also known as the Malabar tamarind, is a popular weight-loss supplement. People say it blocks your body's ability to make fat and it puts the brakes on your appetite. It could help keep blood sugar and cholesterol levels in check, too. You'll find it in bottles on the shelf at the store as well as mixed with other ingredients in diet products.
Does it live up to its hype? Maybe a little, but it might not be worth it.
How It Works
The active ingredient in the fruit's rind, hydroxycitric acid, or HCA, has boosted fat-burning and cut back appetite in studies. It appears to block an enzyme called citrate lyase, which your body uses to make fat.
At the end of the study, the researchers discovered that both Groups 1 and 2 had reduced body weight, reduced body mass index, reduced food intake, and reduced total cholesterol.
It also raises levels of the brain chemical serotonin, which may make you feel less hungry.
But actual weight loss results aren't impressive. A review published in the Journal of Obesityfound that people who took garcinia cambogia in studies lost about 2 pounds more than people who didn't take it. The reviewers couldn't say for sure that the weight loss was because of the supplement. It could have been from the lower-calorie diet and exercise programs the people in the studies typically followed. Better studies are needed to find out if HCA really helps people lose a lot of weight and keep it off.
Type 2 Diabetes and High Cholesterol
Garcinia cambogia may make it easier for your body to use glucose, the sugar your cells need for energy. Mice that got garcinia cambogia in one study had lower insulin levels than mice that didn't. That's another reason, besides weight loss, that people with diabetes are interested in it. However, if you're taking garcinia cambogia along with a medication to control your blood sugar, your glucose could get dangerously low.
Some research has found that garcinia cambogia can also improve cholesterol levels, lowering triglycerides and LDL (the "bad" cholesterol) and raising HDL (the "good" cholesterol). But you shouldn't use it if you're already on a prescription for your cholesterol.

When you take garcinia cambogia, you might get:
In 2009, the Food and Drug Administration warned everyone to stop using a weight-loss product that contained garcinia cambogia because some people taking it got serious liver problems. The product had other ingredients, too, so it's not clear that garcinia cambogia was to blame. While some research suggests the supplement is safe for your liver, other research says no.

You definitely don't want to use it when you're pregnant or nursing, or if you have kidney or liver problems. It is possible that manic symptoms may emerge as a side effect.
To Buy or Not to Buy
Since study results are mixed, you should talk with your doctor to help you decide if taking garcinia cambogia is a good idea. Even if it's safe, it may not help you lose much weight. It's probably wiser to spend your money on healthy food or an exercise DVD.

Can Garcinia Cambogia damage your liver by any chance?
I’ve read about many side effects of Garcinia but this one sure got my attention.
I’m sure it got you panicking too that’s why you’re reading this article.
I mean, think about it, liver damage is not the same as waking up one morning with random diarrhea or constipation.
Yes, those are bad too but their consequences are minimal compared to this side effect concerning the liver.
Let’s find out if there’s any evidence to support that claim.

What Does Research Say About Garcinia Cambogia Causing Liver Damage?
Case 1: Young man diagnosed with Hepatotoxicity (liver damage caused by chemicals)
A 27-year-old man went to the hospital complaining of having symptoms such as fever, chills and abdominal pain for 2 weeks [ 1 ].
He also had nausea and vomiting of clear liquid without blood for a week.
After questioning the patient, he told doctors that he was training to become a physical trainer at a local college.
He did heavy exercises every week and took a set of supplements prescribed by his local nutrition center.
After all the tests, including liver biopsy, this young man was found to have signs of acute liver failure.
He used a supplement called Hydroxycut which the doctors believe is the culprit behind his liver damage.
Now here’s the deal: From all of the ingredients of Hydroxycut, Garcinia Cambogia is one of the 3 main listed to have an association with the liver damage related to Hydroxycut.
This is not the only case of Hydroxycut related liver failure. There have been numerous cases and even several deaths reported [ 4 , 5 ].
Case 2: 34-year-old man diagnosed with Liver failure from Garcinia Cambogia
A 34-year-old Hispanic man was presented with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and dark urine [ 2 ].
After all the necessary tests, he was questioned about the use of any energy drinks, herbs, Chinese teas or muscle milk.
He denied those and was advised by the doctors to discontinue the occasional alcohol use and he did what the doctors asked.
His symptoms were less intense for some time.
6 weeks later, he developed asterixis, jaundice, and confusion.
How did they find out?
The findings from further intensive evaluations, a full repeat hepatitis work-up, and a liver biopsy revealed that his liver damage was potentially a drug-induced one.
After extensive questioning, the patient admitted to the doctors that he was taking Garcinia Cambogia supplements purchased from Swanson Vitamins for 5 months.
He has been taking it 3 times a day (Garcinia Cambogia extract ratio 5:1) before meals for 5 months.
He continued to take it even after his initial presentation.
He also denied any other medications, supplements and had no alcohol for 2 months.
He eventually needed an orthotopic liver transplant to live!
The man diagnosed with liver failure from case 2’s condition got worse and his mental status deteriorated.
This young man was fortunate to receive an orthotopic liver transplant from a dead brain donor.
Garcinia Cambogia was the accused substance in both of those Liver failure cases.
Is it a coincidence that in both of the above cases, Garcinia was doubted as the risk factor behind their liver failures?
Almost all studies that doubt Garcinia to be a risk factor of Liver damage conclude that further research is necessary to draw accurate conclusions.
However, they also requested for a public warning to this kind of dangerous side effects.
2 Women needed Liver Transplant after using Garcinia Cambogia
This research paper has a short analysis of the risks involved with all the popular weight loss supplements out there.
This product is available with 80% HCA in Nz for $23.40 NZ and shipped all over the world.
It also has a section for Garcinia [ 3 ].
Here’s what it included:
- A 52-year-old woman needed an orthotopic liver transplant after taking Garcinia Cambogia daily for 15 days to lose weight.
- The second is a 42-year-old woman who took Garcinia for 1 week for weight loss.
This research paper also mentions that the exact (100% accurate) causes of their liver damage were not found.
But one thing they both had in common?
1 . Does Garcinia Cambogia cause liver damage or not? Just tell me a final answer!
Majority of the research papers conclude that more accurate research is needed to find out if/how Garcinia causes liver damage.
However, the same papers also don’t fail to mention that Garcinia Cambogia was the number 1 doubted risk factor behind all of those cases reported.
Think about the people mentioned in this article who had to have a liver transplant after taking Garcinia.
Is it the same as waking up one morning with a random headache or constipation?

2 . How Comes everybody is singing praises about Garcinia then?
How many times have you seen a video or before/after updates from these people?
Many of them sing praises just for the sake of earning a commission from recommending the product.
