Garcinia Cambogia: Safe for Weight Loss?

Garcinia cambogia, a tropical fruit also known as the Malabar tamarind, is a popular weight-loss supplement. People say it blocks your body's ability to make fat and it puts the brakes on your appetite. It could help keep blood sugar and cholesterol levels in check, too. You'll find it in bottles on the shelf at the store as well as mixed with other ingredients in diet products.
Does it live up to its hype? Maybe a little, but it might not be worth it.
How It Works
The active ingredient in the fruit's rind, hydroxycitric acid, or HCA, has boosted fat-burning and cut back appetite in studies. It appears to block an enzyme called citrate lyase, which your body uses to make fat. It also raises levels of the brain chemical serotonin, which may make you feel less hungry.
But actual weight loss results aren't impressive. A review published in the Journal of Obesityfound that people who took garcinia cambogia in studies lost about 2 pounds more than people who didn't take it. The reviewers couldn't say for sure that the weight loss was because of the supplement. It could have been from the lower-calorie diet and exercise programs the people in the studies typically followed. Better studies are needed to find out if HCA really helps people lose a lot of weight and keep it off.
Type 2 Diabetes and High Cholesterol
Garcinia cambogia may make it easier for your body to use glucose, the sugar your cells need for energy. Mice that got garcinia cambogia in one study had lower insulin levels than mice that didn't. That's another reason, besides weight loss, that people with diabetes are interested in it. However, if you're taking garcinia cambogia along with a medication to control your blood sugar, your glucose could get dangerously low.
Some research has found that garcinia cambogia can also improve cholesterol levels, lowering triglycerides and LDL (the "bad" cholesterol) and raising HDL (the "good" cholesterol). But you shouldn't use it if you're already on a prescription for your cholesterol.
Possible Side Effects
When you take garcinia cambogia, you might get:
In 2009, the Food and Drug Administration warned everyone to stop using a weight-loss product that contained garcinia cambogia because some people taking it got serious liver problems. The product had other ingredients, too, so it's not clear that garcinia cambogia was to blame. While some research suggests the supplement is safe for your liver, other research says no.
Garcinia cambogia may interact badly with:
You definitely don't want to use it when you're pregnant or nursing, or if you have kidney or liver problems. It is possible that manic symptoms may emerge as a side effect.
To Buy or Not to Buy
Since study results are mixed, you should talk with your doctor to help you decide if taking garcinia cambogia is a good idea. Even if it's safe, it may not help you lose much weight. It's probably wiser to spend your money on healthy food or an exercise DVD.

Unfortunately, that reputation comes from low-quality Garcinia cambogia extract manufacturers, many of which try to pass off dangerous caffeine-based formulations as some type of Garcinia cambogia extract.

Bio Health Garcinia Cambogia is a dietary supplement formulated to help with weight loss*. It contains garcinia cambogia extract with 60% HCA which is more than the recommended concentration of 50% recommended by experts. It also contains certain minerals that ensure peak absorption of the active ingredient for optimal weight loss*. One container with 60 capsules is priced $29.60 on the product’s website and the product comes with a money back guarantee. The dietary supplement is from Bio Health Research which is based in Hoboken, New Jersey. The company is not well-known and they are not known to offer any other dietary supplement. How Does Bio Health Garcinia Cambogia Work?
The supplement is said to work by:
Enhancing* the fat burning process of the body – It uses the active ingredient HCA to inhibit the enzyme lyase citrate which is the compound necessary for the conversion of excess carbohydrates into fat. Thus, it prevents the storage of fat in the body and the carbohydrates are utilized for energy instead.
Suppressing the appetite – The active ingredient also works to increase* the level of the neurotransmitter serotonin which is directly connected to appetite control. This is very useful in reducing* emotional eating and preventing food cravings to help the user decrease* caloric intake which will result to fast weight loss*.
Boosting the mood – Aside from increasing* serotonin level which helps improve* the mood of the user, the active ingredient also helps manage the stress hormones in the body. This helps prevent excess caloric intake from stress eating or emotional eating. This also helps the user relax and get adequate sleep which contributes to weight loss*.
Active Ingredients in Bio Health Garcinia Cambogia
Garcinia cambogia extract – There are 500 mg of this active ingredient in each capsule of the supplement.
When I called other companies I usually couldn’t even talk to a REAL PERSON .
The “Pure” product they stock has by far gotten better results in studies than any other version of the extract.
It contains 60% HCA which is more than the 50% recommended by experts for weight loss*. This means that the appetite suppressant, fat burning and mood enhancing* properties are at optimum levels.
Mineral blend – It contains 50 mg calcium, 200 mcg potassium and 50 mg chromium which are minerals that maximize the effectiveness of the primary active ingredient. These ensure that none of the active ingredient will go to waste and the result will be optimum weight loss*.

After taking Bio Health Garcinia Cambogia under scrutiny, it is a good product for weight loss*. There are several studies showing that garcinia cambogia extract can help with weight loss* by suppressing the appetite and preventing fat storage in the body. The main problem is the limited availability of the product but it is worth a try especially since it comes with a money back guarantee.
Trying to find an effective weight loss supplement can be an overwhelming experience. Weight loss supplements often claim to provide outlandish results. Weight loss products should be analyzed based on four key factors: potential to increase metabolism, potential to meet weight loss* goals, potential to promote appetite suppression, and quality of ingredients backed by clinical studies.
Below you'll find some of the most effective weight loss supplements on the market today, in our opinion.
All About Garcinia Cambogia Extract
Here we review recently launched Garcinia Cambogia extract launched by Bio Health.
Table of Contents
About the Company
There is not much information available about Bio Health Research, the name of the company producing this extract.
29 HCA promoted lipid oxidation and reduced carbohydrate use in mice at rest and during running.
It seems from the website that Garcinia Cambogia is the only product they have in the market. Thus, it seems to be a very recent entrant in the weight loss supplement market.
A few good things we liked about the company is that they have an address and a phone number to contact. We would encourage anyone who plans to buy this extract to first call and talk to a real person before buying.
Strangely we did not find the product selling on Amazon yet (this may change in future maybe). Not sure of the reason though.
Key specification of the product
Here are key specs of the GCE extract by Bio Health:
- Each bottle has 60 capsules.
- Capsules are of 500 mg each.
- Serving size is 2 capsules
- It has 60% HCA. This is more that what Dr. Oz recommended (50%). Which is a positive point
- Has 50 mg calcium, 200 mcg potassium and 50 mg chromium. These minerals were recommended by Dr. Oz to be part of a good GCE brand as they help in proper absorption of the extract.
- Company claims that no artificial binders and ingredients have been added to the extract. They claim it to be 100% herbal product.
- The product is made in USA at an FDA approved facility.
The company also provides a money back guarantee over its products. At $29.60 per bottle the product is not cheap at all.
What customers are talking about the product?
The product seem to be selling at very select places as of now. We did not find it any of the leading portals yet. Thus, there are no concrete customer reviews available on the product.
The specs. of the product seem fine but it is new and with unavailability of customer reviews anyone who will be buying will be doing it blindly. Further, as it is not yet available over websites as Amazon payment related and delivery issues may also be there.
Overall, we feel at this price you can get much well known and well tested Garcinia Cambogia brands. Please see our “best brands updates” for that (here is the link for October one). From our side, give this one a skip for time being.

BioHealth was a horrible company to do business with. I had to order 5 bottles to get the price they said it would be. I took four pills over two days and had to go home so sick I thought I may have to go to the ER. My abdomen was in so much pain I thought something was bursting. I could do nothing but go to bed. It took three days to recover and I’m still not sure that I am. They do not give a 100% back guarantee. They keep you on te phone for 45 minutes. They charge you $5.00 a bottle to “restock” them. I give a big thumbs down to this company.
They are a fraudulent company…they quote a price online and when they take your money, it’s $40.00 more than they quoted. that’s a scam to me….then you must wait 7 days to get your money refunded while they use your money for the days gains..terrible company….I ordered there special saying buy 2 bottles at $30.00 w/free shipping and get one bottle free…..they charged me for all 3 bottles totaling $97.98.
The genus Garcinia is mainly distributed in tropical regions and includes approximately 200 species.
this should only have been $60.00. My bank is putting a dispute in to the company, but dont get into this predicament, it’s not worth the money or the product…I found Nutritional Concepts sells the same product and it works for $7.00 a bottle……..
I paid $48 for this product at least a month ago. I can’t even remember what the deal was.Something like buy 2 bottles and get one free. They sure did take the money fast enough but as of yet I still don’t have the product. After reading the first 2 reviews I think I’ll just cut my loses and RUN!
Same happened to me. I ordered the buy 3 get 2 free and they charged me for all 5. I immediately called to cancel the order. After two unsuccessful phone calls I finally spoke with CSR Rick who sounded like he needed a speech class. After he “tried” to tell me there was no order to cancel because it was a one time sale. I almost flipped, then he “tried” to offer me a 35% refund. I asked to speak to his manager who conveniently was not available. So I asked to speak to a supervisor at which point he “tried” to offer me a 75% refund. After raising my voice I guess he realized I was not taking no for an answer, so he said he had to get approval from his Lead CSR to authorize the 100% refund. That was approved, however, Rick claimed that he could not process the cancellation because the order was not processed. He told me to call back after 24 hours to cancel. B.S. in my opinion but ok. Nonetheless, I decided to go back to the receipt they emailed. At the bottom of the receipt was a link to check your order. I clicked the link, and Low and Behold there was a link to cancel my order. I cancelled and received a email notification immediately stating that my transaction would be voided and I would receive my full refund within 1-3 days. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY. THEY OBVIOUSLY ATTEMPT TO RIP YOU OFF IN ANY WAY POSSIBLE. THEY HAVE A 30 DAY MONEY BACK GUARANTEE SO DONT LET THEM TALK YOU OUT OF YOUR MONEY IF YOU DID ORDER AND WANT TO CANCEL.
I just recently ordered this product. I bought two and got one bottle free. I am pretty sure it was around $98 or so which it stated before ordering from BIO Health. It was free shipping and arrived in 6 days. I even got a call from the company to make sure my address was correct and to thank me for my purchase. This bottle is pure, 60% HCA, no fillers, etc. This is everything you need to look for when ordering any kind of Garcinia. You are only supposed to take the recommended dosage on the bottle. If you take too much of this product you can definitely end up sick. It is important to go by the directions. You can have too much of a good thing. So that being said, I didn’t have any issues and so far I have been taking the product for a couple days and can see that my energy level has increased, my appetite has been suppressed, and I feel overall good.
I got this BioHealth brand Garcinia Cambogia about 4 or 5 months ago. I got one bottle for $19.99 and never did actually try it. Then a month later when checking my account balance I discovered they automatically continue sending bottles every month unless you cancel membership.
Products sold in mail catalogs also tend to have fewer problems than those sold only on the web.
So I called and cancelled and they were very fast to cancel my membership. Oh yeah they only charged 19.99 for the second bottle as well so I got the pricing I expected to pay. However I am now sitting on the two bottles not sure if I should even try them after all the bad things I have heard about the product period. The worst thing that I have experienced is that I now get calls 6-8 times a day from sales companies trying to sell me other stuff which is quite annoying, I am about to change my number its getting out of control. Did they sell my number to other companies or are they trying to sell me on other things?
i wanted to buy online one bottle which was going for 350.00 and ended up being charged 1623.79 for something which i dont even have, its been over a month now and i now need my money back
I purchased this product when offered “BOGO” deal. i purchased it bc i have horrible fatigue issues & was told this may help with my energy. i DO notice quite a bit of difference in my energy level, however, i did NOT realize this was also used as a weight loss supplement. sadly, i went from a healthy 130 pounds (i am 5’6″) down to 102 pounds within a matter of 4-5 weeks.i had numerous tests done through my primary care doctor and we couldn’t pinpoint why i was losing so much weight-and so quickly…it wasn’t until i made a complete list of my meds-but this time including any and all vitamins i was taking, that we discovered it was this supplement.i have since cut down to only taking 1 per day (sometimes skipping a day) because it does seem to help with my energy and appears to be helping me with my mental clarity and tummy issues. i suppose,if you are TRYING to lose weight, then maybe try this.i say that because i don’t know if my results are typical or if it has something to do with your general dna and how your body processes certain ingredients.i would definitely recommend this, though,if you struggle with fatigue.by the way-i didn’t have any issues with payment, receiving the products,or anything. in fact, when i ordered this online it did state that i would be charged each month automatically and receive a new bottle each month, but gave me the option that if i canceled (for any reason) and called within 30 days of receiving the bottles, that it wouldn’t be an issue. as soon as i received the bottles,i called 2-3 days later and canceled.i didn’t want to commit to it until i saw if it really would help with my energy levels.no.i do not work for them,or know anyone who does.just sharing my own experience that i personally had. hope this helps!
I ordered the coffee and Garcinia products ‘for the cost of shipping only’ and today I saw a $90 charge on my debit card. And they claim that I can only have $70 of ir back! Going to file a complaint with BBB! Class action lawsuit coming your way soon!
