(12/6/13): The distributor of one of the products reported in this review to contain less HCA than listed, notified CL that its own recent tests of the product showed it to contain the amount listed on its label and, per CL's policy, asked that the product be retested. Week one- no change in exercise or diet. Side affects- had a headache day one but went away. Likely due to aspartame withdrawal.

For some reason I have almost no desire for sweet tasting things anymore. Drinking tons of water. Had constipation for three days but things "got going" again day four and regulated. No other side affects. Started at 210 lbs and ended week at 204.8 lbs. Net loss of 5.2 lbs after one week. Noticed belly shrinking and one person asked if I was losing weight. I will report after week two on April 22nd. Appetite suppressed decently. Bring any and all questions.- Jim

Week two- no change in exercise or diet. Pigged out a little too much for easter. Still a little constipated but nothing major. No other side affects. Weight is 204.5. Lost .3 lbs. 5.5 lb loss over two weeks for 2.75 lbs per week. Next weeks update April 29th.-Jim

Week four(1 month in)- No change to diet or exercise. If I don't slug water I still have constipation issues. Weight is 203.6 for a first month loss of 6.4 lbs or an average of 1.60 lbs per week. Next week's update on May 13th. No other side affects.

Week Five- No change to diet or exercise.Still need copious amounts of water to prevent constipation. No other side affects.Weight is 202.2 for a five week total of 7.80 lbs or 1.56 lbs per week average. I have noticed a steady decline of weight loss per week after initial week though still losing steadily. Next week's update on May 20th.

Week six- No diet or exercise change. Still pounding the water to me. No other side affects. Weight is 201.1 for a week loss of 1.1 lbs. Total for six weeks is 8.9 lbs for a weekly average of 1.48lbs loss per week. Next week's update May 27th.-Jim

Week Seven-No change in diet or exercise. Still need a ton of water, (I am talking about a gallon of fluids per day to stay regular.), it doesn't seem to affect some people this way but it does me. Under 200 lbs for the first time in forever. Weight is 199.5 for a weekly loss of 1.6 lbs. Total weight loss over seven weeks is 10.5 lbs for a seven week average of 1.5 lbs. Next week's update on June 3rd. No other side affects.

Week 8- no affects other than having to guzzle water to stay regular. Weight this week was 199.1 for an 8 week total of 10.9 lbs or a weekly average of 1.36 lbs.

Week 10- Weight is 198.6 for a .5 lb loss. I have noticed the constipation issue has ceased.

Week 11- June 24th- Weight is 198 even. That is a 12 lb loss in 11 weeks without any change to diet or exercise for a weekly average of 1.09 lbs lost each week. I think this is normal and healthy. No side affects this week. Next week's report on July 1st.

Week 11- No change to diet or exercise. Ony lost a quarter of a pound this week but I have less to lose so this makes sense. Weight is 197.7 this week. No side affects at all anymore. Feel great and gut has shrunk nicely over the past 2.5 months. Next report July 8th.

Week 12- No diet or exercise change. Seemed to break through a mini plateau this week. Lost 1.1 lbs!Weight is 196.6 and no side affects this week. Overall I have lost 13.4 lbs in three months. I believe this is a healthy rate. Next week's report on July 15th.

WEEK 13- No diet or exercise change. Battling a chest cold this week. Weight is 195.1 for a 1.4lb loss. This may be partially attributed to the chest cold as naturally my appetite is affected keep in mind. We will find out next week. Total loss so far over 13 weeks is 14.9 lbs for a weekly average of 1.14 lbs per week. No side affects. Large water consumption has finally stabilized the bowel movements. Regular for weeks now. Next week's report on July 22nd.

WEEK 14- No diet or exercise change. Cold now over. Weight is 194.8 for a weekly loss of .3 lbs. Total loss of 15.2 lbs over 14 weeks. No side affects at all. Still drinking copious water amounts with no constipation. Body has adjusted to this and I do not pee 20 times a day! Five weeks left in study. Next week's report on July 29th. Still answering all questions.

WEEK 15- No diet or exercise change. only lost .3 of a lb this week. No side affects and mood seems stable.

WEEK 16- No diet or exercise change. I have been downing the beer like it's going out of style like I do in summer while on vacation from work.I still lost .6 of a lb this week. Less stress from being on vacation? No shiftwork due to vacation? Who knows? Anyway, I'll take it!Total loss of 16.1 lbs over 16 weeks.Next review on August 8th.

WEEK 17- No change in diet or exercise as usual.

Drops were always the original form of oral HCG, but dosing was very inaccurate and holding a mouth full of liquid for 5-10 minutes isn’t always pleasant.

Lost 1.2 lbs this week but it's better than a gain I guess. No side affects. Back to work and shiftwork next week so we'll see how things go.17.3 lbs over 17 weeks. Next review on August 15th. Capsules nearly done. Two weeks left then I will post full results.

WEEK 18- No change in diet or exercise. I lost .6 of a lb this past week. That makes 17.9 lbs over 18 weeks. Felt a little bloated this week but noticed I didn't drink as much water. I piled a bunch to me and it soon corrected itself. Final report and last week of study on August 22nd.

LAST WEEK!- No change from diet or exercise. Drank lots of water. Lost 1.2 lbs in final week. Weight loss total over 19 weeks is 19.1 lbs.

Can Garcinia Cambogia Help with Weight Loss?

Is there such a thing as a weight loss miracle drug?

Today’s market is full of “miracle drugs” and supplements that claim to help you drop pounds fast. It’s no wonder they fly off the shelves and into medicine cabinets across the country. TV personality Dr. Oz and others like him have showered praise on one of these products in particular: the controversial garcinia cambogia fruit.

Garcinia cambogia is a citrus fruit that grows in Southeast Asia. An extract from the fruit’s rind, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), has historically been used for cooking, but it has also been used for weight loss. You can buy garcinia cambogia online or at most health and supplement stores. It comes in pill form or as a powder. Let’s look at what, if anything, garcinia cambogia can do for your weight.

Advocates say that HCA, an organic acid, works by making you feel full, reducing your appetite, and affecting your metabolism. It’s this effect that has led many to herald it as a natural weight loss cure. Some say it may also help improve high cholesterol or enhance athletic performance.

The list of garcinia cambogia’s rumored benefits is a long one. It can be hard to determine the truth to the claims about its “miracle” properties. So, how do these health claims match up to scientific research?

1. Claim: Makes you feel full

Verdict: No evidence. An extensive review of the existing research on garcinia cambogia determined that there simply wasn’t conclusive evidence to suggest that the supplement or HCA had any effects on appetite and satiety.

It’s a small price but it will definitely be a great tool to help you accomplish your weight loss goal.

Although some rodent studies had positive results, no human studies could replicate them.

2. Claim: Lowers body weight

Verdict: No evidence. Existing evidence doesn’t prove that garcinia cambogia alone can facilitate weight loss. A 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in JAMA found that the supplement didn’t help with significant weight loss or decrease in fat mass. Both the control and garcinia group were placed on high-fiber, low-calorie diets.

3. Claim: Speeds metabolism

Verdict: Some evidence. There is some evidence that supplementing with garcinia cambogia can influence fat metabolism. Several studies have found that both mice and humans experience an increase in fat metabolism after supplementing with HCA.

4. Claim: Enhances athletic performance

Verdict: Some evidence. Garcinia cambogia may increase the amount of time it takes to reach exhaustion during exercise, according to one study. Another study that used mice had similar results, showing that HCA enhanced endurance during running.

In addition to knowing how well it works, you’ll also want to know about a supplement’s potential side effects. Reported side effects for garcinia cambogia are mild. They include:

Drug interactions

As with all dietary supplements, HCA could interact with medications you take. Before starting HCA, be sure to talk to your doctor. Make sure they know about all medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs as well as other supplements.

Part of the allure of garcinia cambogia is the fact that it comes from a fruit, so it’s considered “natural.” However, this alone doesn’t make it a worthwhile supplement or even safe. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends using caution with products that claim to be quick fixes, promise fast weight loss, and use the term “natural.” Natural doesn’t necessarily mean safe. There are many poisonous plants that are natural, but can cause you serious harm. Many plants interfere with medication or are actually medications themselves.

More importantly, dietary supplements such as garcinia cambogia aren’t studied or approved by the FDA before they go on the market.

When companies add a laundry list of other ingredients, they are often filling the product with unnecessary and unhelpful junk.

Furthermore, supplement makers can claim that their products support normal body functions as long as they have a disclaimer stating that the FDA hasn’t evaluated those statements. In other words, supplements containing garcinia cambogia have not been rigorously tested for effectiveness, quality, purity, or safety.

Possible liver problems

In 2009, the FDA recalled a product that contained garcinia cambogia because it was found to cause liver problems. Research since then has been conflicted, with some citing a link between garcinia cambogia and liver damage and other research finding no link. You should discuss this risk with your doctor.

Long-term use

A review of studies on HCA found that no studies have effectively looked at garcinia cambogia use for longer than 12 weeks. That means there isn’t enough evidence to ensure that it’s safe and effective for long-term use.

The danger of scams

It’s free, so what’s the harm, right? Actually, those free trials for products that claim to help you lose weight fast can present more harm than you might think. From surprise shipping fees to extra charges for products you didn’t realize you ordered, these trials can end up costing you money. “Miracle” weight loss solutions rarely live up to the hype. Even when there is scientific evidence of positive results, the results are often so mild and minimal that users are disappointed to learn they still have to exercise and control their eating in order to reap lasting and significant weight loss.

Dr. Oz has come under fire for promoting “miracle” weight loss products on his show. His claims got him into trouble with the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Insurance. There’s a reason that claims such as his about products with no clear evidence of effectiveness are taken seriously. Many consumers trust his opinion and could be misled into buying something that is, at best, a waste of time and money, and at worst, laden with potential side effects.

According to the FDA, any product, whether natural or man-made, that’s strong enough to work like a drug is capable of producing side effects. Before you add a dietary supplement to your weight loss plan, discuss it with your doctor.
