We looked at all the randomized, double-blind clinical studies on humans. Some we excluded were either too short (2 weeks), used too small a dose, or had other flaws such as a low fat, high carb diet which researchers believe had a negative impact on the results.

This chart shows the results from the most relevant clinical studies on Garcinia Cambogia, encompassing 307 participants (7,8,9,10).

All of these were Double Blind,Randomized Controlled Trials, with subjects given Garcinia Cambogia or Placebo over 8-12 weeks.

The average for these 4 studies was 4.1 pounds lost vs 1.7 for those taking Placebo.

It should be noted that studies #3 and 4 used the highest dosages of 2800 mg daily, and showed the greatest amount of weight loss compared to placebo.

Studies #1 and 2 showed the least amount of weight loss benefit, and also used the lowest amount of Garcinia Cambogia, at 1200 mg per day.

Conclusion: The average for the 4 relevant clinical studies on humans showed weight loss of 3 pounds more than placebo. Studies that used higher doses of HCA recorded more weight loss.

For reference, Alli cost $60 for 120 capsules! The literature claims it can block 25% of the fat you eat from being absorbed.

Not surprisingly, the research they pay for often finds mixed results, with some studies showing positive effects for Garcinia Cambogia and some not.

The academic editor for that meta review was also the lead author for a few of the studies that found Garcinia to be ineffective.

Garcinia Cambogia is somewhat unique in that there are 2 pathways the HCA utilizes to help with weight loss

1. It May Help Reduce Hunger

Studies with rats have shown those given Garcinia Cambogia tend to eat less than those in the control group(11, 12).

How it works isn’t fully known, but those studies seem to indicate it increases levels of serotonin in the brain. (13, 14).

Likewise, some clinical studies with humans has shown it tends promote feeling of satiety (fullness), so you eat less. (15, 16, 17, 18, 19).

Serotonin is the “feel good” hormone that promotes feelings of satisfaction and is well known to be an appetite suppressant. (20).

Conclusion: Some studies have shown garcinia cambogia increases serotonin to suppress appetite, but there have been other studies that could not replicate this effect.

2. It May Block Fat Production and Reduce Belly Fat

The effect HCA has on fatty acids in the bloodstream is the most important factor in its ability to aid weight loss.

Human and animal studies has shown HCA helps lower levels of triglycerides in the blood, reducing the oxidative stress throughout the body. (25, 26, 27, 28, 28).

It is even more attractive as a weight loss aid as it helps reduce belly. (29).

Another study gave moderately obese individuals 2,800 mg of garcinia cambogia daily for eight weeks (30).

After completion, participants had dramatically lower markers of metabolic disease such as:

  • 6.3% LOWER Total cholesterol levels
  • 12.3% LOWER LDL (the “bad”) cholesterol levels
  • 10.7% HIGHER HDL (the “good”) cholesterol levels
  • 8.6% LOWER Blood triglycerides

This is due to the inhibition of the enzyme citrate lyase, which signals the production of fat in the body (32, 33, 34, 35, 36).

By inhibiting citrate lyase, garcinia cambogia is thought to slow down or block fat production in the body. This may reduce blood fats and lower the risk of weight gain, two major disease risk factors (37).

Conclusion: Garcinia cambogia blocks the production of new fats in the body, and has been shown to lower cholesterol levels and blood triglycerides in overweight people.

OTHER HEALTH BENEFITS

Animal and test-tube studies suggest that garcinia cambogia may also have some anti-diabetic effects, including (38, 39, 40):

  • Decreasing insulin levels
  • Decreasing leptin levels
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Improving blood sugar control
  • Increasing insulin sensitivity

Garcinia cambogia may also have benefits for the digestive system. Animal studies have suggested it helps protect against stomach ulcers and reduce damage to the inner lining of the digestive tract (41, 42).

70% HCA means that the manufacturer has standardized the extract to be 70% Hydroxycitric Acid by volume.

50-60% was the highest purity commercially available until recently, so has been the standard used for testing.

The higher percentage provides more total HCA per capsule, but is not more effective otherwise.

In other words, the higher HCA % is not “better”, you just need less of it.

For proper dosage, you should lower the quantity if you use a product with HCA % higher than the 60% used in studies.

For example, the maximum recommended dosage of 3 grams per day of a 60% HCA product would yield 1800 mg of pure HCA – the same as 2 grams of 90% HCA.

I did buy this specific brand, “Miracle G C” and am a little confused on the dosing. The bottle says take two capsules per day. That appears to be one serving, which would be 2000mg (each capsule is 1000mg). Should BOTH capsules be taken together before one meal during the day, or should ONE capsule be taken TWICE daily, an hour prior to each meal?

Actually Shari, I did answer the question. You can take the pills anytime you want before a meal (breakfast, lunch or dinner). And for that specific brand at the time (I no longer recommend that brand) the serving size was two capsule = 1000mg (500mg/capsule) and NOT one capsule = 1000mg.

Occasionally when I eat something that is not Real food, it is disturbingly non-food-like to me… Like eating cardboard, or poison.

So two capsules for the entire day would be a weak dosage. I would recommend 3 capsules daily for a total of 1500mg.

Hey Selena, I have not heard of those specific brands but as long as they don’t have any filler ingredients and they do have the required amount of HCA then they should be okay.

I also have garcinia cambogia g3000 it says take 2 capules twice a day does that mean take two at bf and two at dinner or if I take 4pills a day can I take one for bf and one at lunch and two at dinner

Hey Toya, whichever way you take it, it will work as long as you don’t go over the daily dosage requirements. So one at bf, one at lunch and two at dinner will work just as two at breakfast and two at dinner.

What about taking the Garcinia Cambogia capsules with raspberry ketone do you take both capsules around the same time or do you take one capsule and wait a while and then take the other capsule. instructions for the Garcinia Cambogia say take 2 capsules daily 30 minutes before eating with 8-ounce glass of water and the Keystone instructions say take one capsule before breakfast or morning exercise session and one tablet at mid-afternoon with 8-ounce glass of water. Also for the Garcia Cambodia when it says to take 2 capsules daily before meal time does that mean take two at once before each meal equaling a total of four daily or one before breakfast and one before dinner or lunch?

Hey Erica, check the label on the bottle to see what is the serving size. If it is two capsules for the serving size then you take both tablets at once. If not then you spread them out. Also, if you take Raspberry as well, you can take it in the mornings the same time you take your garcinia capsules.

What is the longest period of time between taking a capsule (in my case, 900mg @60%) and eating a regular meal? Can I take it up to 2-3 hours prior to eating or will that defeat the purpose?

Hey Carol, I would suggest that you allow at least 3 hours between each dosage. SO if you that the pills twice daily, morning and evening would be great for example.

I am very knee to buy this product but before that i have few doubt,

1,I weight up to 85kgs so how many pills i need to take per day if i want to reduce in 3 to 4 months?

2. Hey Chaya, your question is very common and to be honest, I think you have the wrong approach. I think all you want to do is to take the garcinia pills and expect to lose the weight without doing much of anything else. Am I right? If not I am sorry but you can’t look at it that way. You see, there are no pills (except for deuretics which actually make you lose water) that will allow you to just lose weight if your lifestyle remains the same.

They are called “SUPPLEMENTS” for a reason because the supplement what you should already be doing. Which is to focus on healthy eating and an exercise program.

With that being said, if you are eating healthy and exercising regularly, a regular dosage of garcinia will give you that boost you need. As to pregnancy, these are natural supplements and have no negative effects but I am not a doctor so I advise that you contact your healthcare professional for medical advice.

Hi I have a quick question, when it comes to the max dosage of 3000 mg. Is that 3000 mg of garcinia cambogia or of the Hydroxy citric acid. My bottle contains 1000 mg of g. Cambogia, standardized to 50% HCA for 2 pills. I have been taking 2 in the morning and 2 before dinner so is that 2000 mg or only a 1000 mg?

Hey Sandra, it is 3000mg of the Garcinia as per the dosage on the bottle. The label doesn’t report the HCA in mg but rather as a percentage.

With regards to your supplement, if you are taking two capsules that would total 1000mg since the serving size if 2 pills. So overall you would be taking 2000mg dosage for the day.
