A wild berry native to West Africa which has been turned into a dissolving tablet, may hold the key to successful long-term weight loss.
Nicknamed the miracle berry, the plant contains a naturally-occurring protein that temporarily inhibits sour flavors from entering taste bud receptacles, while at the same time sweentening spicy, salty and bitter foods.
Homaro Cantu, a Chicago-based chef who re-discovered the berries properties, said the organic, non-genetically modified plant could help in eliminating sugar and sweeteners from American diets altogether.
Sour to sweet: The berry contains a naturally-occurring protein that temporarily inhibits sour flavors from entering taste bud receptacles
Mr Cantu believes the berries will revolutionize eating habits, and eventually help in the decline of diagnosed diabetes.
'It tricks your tongue into thinking something that's sour, is sweet,' he explained to Good Morning America.
The protein found in the berry, called miraculin, can make a glass of water with lemon tastes like lemonade, and nonfat plain Greek Yogurt taste like cheesecake.
When the fleshy part of the berry is eaten, the miraculin binds sweet receptors on the taste buds - at a neutral pH, the protein simply blocks receptors, but at low pH, after eating sour foods, the miraculin actually activates the sweet receptors, resulting in the perception of sweet taste.

Mr Cantu, known for his scientific gastronomical experiences like printing edible sushi, re-discovered the berry six years ago while working with a cancer patient who lost her sense of taste after intensive chemotherapy treatment.
The berry, which is classified as a food additive by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, allegedly counteracts one of the many side effects of chemotherapy - a metallic taste in the mouth.

Now, he has taken his findings to create hundreds of recipes that use the berries instead of sugar or other sweeteners.
Purchsing the actual berries is costly and time-sensitive (their sehlf-life stands at one or two days in the fridge), so Mr Cantu's The Miracle Berry Diet Cookbook uses recipes designed to interact with a natural miracle berry tablet.
Once the tablet has dissolved on your tongue, it takes three minutes for taste bud receptacles react. Limes start to taste like oranges, and spices, like hot sauce of hot pepper, are toned down and even take on a sweeter flavor, Mr Cantu explained.
Some of his recipes include Orange Waffles, made with lime juice instead of oranges, and Teriyaki chicken with no added sugar, or honey.
The effects of the miracle berry, which is used to sweeten palm wine in its native West Africa, lasts 30 to 40 minutes, and is available in a pill, powder or plant form.
The brand, mberry, sells 10 tablets for $15 on its website, or $2 per fresh berry.
Dr Oz Weight Loss Reviews 2017
2017 is just around the corner and it is time to finally put your New Year resolutions into action.
Sufficient levels of potassium are required to improve most basic body functions by ensuring a balance of ions in your cells.
DiethealthMag, a website for Weight Loss!
For some it may be to quit smoking or alcohol but for a lot of people, the New Year resolution may be to shed a few pounds and lead a more fit and healthy life.
If you are one of those people then do not worry because you are not alone! 1 out of every 3 people in America suffers from obesity and this can cause many health problems like heart disease or blood pressure .
Obesity and being overweight can affect people in many ways and is not only bad for their health but also for their overall confidence and self esteem.
So there’s no guessing why many people rush to every new weight loss product in the market.
However, not all weight loss products actually provide effective results and not all sources are to be trusted.
When it comes to weight loss though, there is one source that has talked about effective products and great results and that is The Dr. Oz Show !
ABOUT DR OZ
Dr. Oz is a health expert, cardio-thoracic surgeon and television personality. He talks about various topics on his show such as exercise, diseases, sex, diets etc.
He was on the Oprah Winfrey Show for 5 years as a health expert until he got his very own show. Dr. Oz is quite well known for his health tips and his “ Total 10 Rapid Weight Loss ” plan has been quite acclaimed.
According to Dr. Oz, this diet was tested over the past year on over 2.5 million viewers , all of whom downloaded the Total 10 Diet plan from the Dr. Oz website.
The viewers lost an average of 10 pounds after the 2 week diet period. So we can say that Dr. Oz definitely knows what he’s doing!
He has also discovered a few natural supplements that can help in quick weight loss without any dietary changes or exercise.
He has talked about some revolutionary supplements and anybody looking to lose weight should definitely consider his advice for miraculous results.
One of those supplements is Raspberry Ketone.
1. RASPBERYY KETONE
Raspberry Ketone is the primary aroma compound of red raspberries. If you watch the Dr. Oz show, you would know that this substance was called “The #1 miracle fat burner.”
After this statement was made by Dr. Oz, supplements based on raspberry ketone sold so fast that stores couldn’t keep them on their shelves and had to frequently restock.
Interestingly, several studies have revealed that the compound can greatly assist in the breakdown of fat present in the cells, which of course, is favorable for boosting the body’s fat burning potentials.
It is also claimed to increase the levels of adiponectin, a hormone that regulates metabolism.
So, this miracle fat burner works in two different ways; by eliminating fat storage in the body and by provoking the metabolic activities .
Tests on animals have also revealed that the compound can help in speeding up the body’s fat burning action.
These studies further suggested that raspberry ketone Plus has the ability to produce a hormone that can help in the breakdown of fat cells faster, especially in the liver.
This in turn, helps to lose weight at a speedier pace.
Garcinia cambogia (hydroxycitric acid) as a potential antiobesity agent: a randomized controlled trial.
But I had stubborn belly fat that all types of exercise and diet had failed to get rid of for good.
The results are obviously more effective when paired with a well balanced diet and good exercise.
In 1965, raspberry ketone received an approval from FDA as food additives that was and is, an indication that the compound is safe to use.
Plus, there have been no known side effects of raspberry ketone; with regard to weight loss which further proves that it possesses no threat for the health.
Mostly, raspberry ketone is available in the form of pills, whereas the suggested dosage to extract the desired weight loss result is 200 mg a day.
If you wish to give raspberry ketone a try, then it’s advised to pick a product that includes its purest of forms.
2. GARCINIA CAMBOGIA
Another miracle agent Dr. Oz boosted about is the infamous Garcinia Cambogia. Garcinia Cambogia is a tropical fruit which is also known as the Malabar Tamarind or brindle berry.
It is a fruit found in India and South East Asia. The active ingredient in the fruit’s rind is called hydroxycitric acid or HCA. As per many studies, it can fuel up the fat burning, in fact, the weight loss potentials in the body.
Studies also suggest that the compound helps in reducing appetite. It blocks an enzyme called citrate lyase which is used by the body to make fat.
As per the further revelations, HCA can also encourage the production of an essential chemical called serotonin. Serotonin is a brain chemical that has lot to do with your hunger.
An increase production would keep your hunger in control whereas low level of serotonin is normally associated with increased appetite.
Today, the most hyped and best selling weight loss products in the market are the ones based on Garcinia Cambogia Extra .
This is because the chemical compound, hydroxycitric acid has been extensively studied by scientists who have discovered that it can actually give you the feeling of satiety.
Alongside weight loss, garcinia cambogia has many other notable benefits to offer.
Garcinia Cambogia makes it easier for your body to use glucose (the sugar your cells need for energy).
Studies show that the compounds in garcinia cambogia can lower insulin levels in the body, which is another plus point for weight loss. These benefits also attract people with increased blood sugar levels or diabetes.
Some researchers have also shown that Garcinia Cambogia can improve cholesterol levels by increasing the good cholesterol and decreasing the bad cholesterol in the body.
It is also rich in calcium, phosphorus, iron, thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin. Through these, it can make you more energetic and concentrated.
Suggested dosages are usually between 250–1,000 milligrams per day.
It does have a few side effects like dizziness or fatigue but it is still a beneficial substance in weight loss.
3. FORSKOLIN EXTRACT
Then comes forskolin extract . This is another agent that Dr. Oz has raved about, of course, because of its amazing weight loss properties. Forskolin is a compound found in a plant of the mint family.
Forskolin extract has gained popularity after Dr.
At the end of the study, the researchers discovered that both Groups 1 and 2 had reduced body weight, reduced body mass index, reduced food intake, and reduced total cholesterol.
Oz introduced it as “a miracle flower.”
Forskolin is commonly found in the eastern hemisphere locations; Thailand, India and Burma as well as Brazil and parts of Africa .
It is a natural activator, controller and regulator of adenylate cyclase- an enzyme that is related to multiple lipid metabolism and glycogen functions.
Another desirable benefit seems to stem from activating cellular adenylate cyclase, which has the ability to stimulate hormones which activate desired fat burning mechanisms within the body.
Forskolin has also been known to increase levels of cAMP- a compound beneficial for a wide range of biochemical and physiological effects, such as lipolysis (burning up/breaking down of fat cells), decrease blood clots, increase relaxation of arteries and also helps with asthma and obesity.
Studies on the plant have shown that it initializes the process of lipolysis (fat break down) in fat cells.
Another study conducted at Penn State discovered that obese people have low levels of cAMP production in their body.
Forskolin increases the production of cAMP so there is no wonder why there is so much hype on its weight loss benefits.
One study was conducted on 6 overweight women who took 250 mg of 10% pure natural Forskolin extract twice a day for 9 weeks .
The results revealed that the participants lost a staggering average weight of 10 pounds and burned over 8% of body fat per person. Also, their blood pressure levels were visibly reduced.
Experts believe that the plant extract can burn fat faster than normal dietary adjustments as it was found to increase the rate of thermogenesis.
An increase in body temperature causes a more rapid metabolic rate and this in turn burns fat and calories faster.
Forskolin extract should only be ingested in its purest form and the dosage should be no more than 25 to 60 mg per day .
So far, the usage of Forskolin Fuel has not rooted any minor or major side effect for the people to question its credibility from Dr. Oz.
FINAL VERDICT ON DR OZ WEIGHT LOSS SHOW
All these fruits and plant extracts suggested by Dr. Oz should only be taken in their most pure form.
Weight loss supplements based on any of these should not be ingested by pregnant women or breast feeding mothers.
They should also be avoided by those on other heavy medications.
Even though, these extracts are purely safe and healthy, however, other ingredients in the weight loss pills may not suit the specified consumers .
Garcinia Probably Works But Is Far From a Weight Loss Miracle
Women make up a majority of Dr. Oz’s audience. The majority of women would like to lose weight. That is a match made in heaven, a marketer’s dream. And Oz has never hesitated to exploit that fact to increase audience share, playing fast and loose with sensationalized evidence instead of giving his viewers science-based advice.
Garcinia cambogia extract (GCE) comes from a tropical fruit from India and Southeast Asia. The active ingredient, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), is said to block fat and suppress the appetite.
One of the chief benefits of garcinia cambogia extract is its ability to halt fat storage.
Oz has promoted a series of weight loss supplements on his show. Raspberry ketones were presented as a fat-busting miracle, then green coffee bean extract was touted as “magic,” “staggering,” and “unprecedented.” And now both of those miracles have apparently been superseded by an even greater miracle: Garcinia cambogia extract.
Dr. Oz calls it “The newest, fastest fat buster.” A way to lose weight without “spending every waking moment exercising and dieting.” “Triples your weight loss.” “The most exciting breakthrough in natural weight loss to date.” “The Holy Grail.” Oz claims that “Revolutionary new research says it could be the magic ingredient that lets you lose weight without diet or exercise.”
All that sounds too good to be true, and it is. Garcinia probably does work to some extent to improve weight loss, but the evidence doesn’t begin to justify such grandiose claims.
Garcinia cambogia extract (GCE) comes from a tropical fruit grown in India and Southeast Asia. The active ingredient has been identified: hydroxycitric acid (HCA). It is said to block fat and suppress the appetite. It inhibits a key enzyme, citrate lyase, that the body needs to make fat from carbohydrates. It suppresses appetite by increasing serotonin levels; low serotonin levels are associated with depression and emotional or reactive eating.
It allegedly decreases belly fat, suppresses appetite, controls emotional eating, and changes body composition by increasing lean muscle mass. It doesn’t just produce weight loss, but it improves overall health. It is said to decrease cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides by 10-30% and to raise levels of the “good cholesterol” HDL.
An independent analysis found that some brands contain far less active ingredient than claimed. Consumers are advised to look for at least 50% GCE with potassium but with no fillers, binders, or artificial ingredients.
It should be taken on empty stomach 30-60 minutes before a meal. Results increase with dosage, but doses over 3 000 mg a day should be cleared with your doctor.
Dr. Oz recommends a dose of 500-1000 mg of Garcinia cambogia potassium before each meal. (Some experts believe the potassium salt is more effective than other formulations.) He says not to take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, because it can worsen dementia. If you have diabetes, it can cause hypoglycemia, and if you are on a statin, it can increase the risk of harmful side effects like rhabdomyolysis or muscle degradation.
Oz contradicts himself: he suggests that it can produce weight loss without diet or exercise, yet he clearly recommends it be used along with exercise and properly portioned meals.
The garcinia evidence
With Dr. Oz’s track record, I was not willing to simply accept his word for the wonders of Garcinia. I went to PubMed, where a search for hydroxycitric acid brought up 64 articles. Some were irrelevant, and the relevant ones included a lot of animal studies and a smaller number of human studies with inconsistent results.
Guinea pigs on a high cholesterol diet who were given a different Garcinia species (atriviridis) had a tendency to decrease lipid composition levels and fat deposition in the aorta.
This means you get to say goodbye to cravings such as sweets and salty foods, say goodbye to emotional and binge eating and say hello to smaller portions each and every time.
HCA caused congenital defects in rats. Another rat study found that it decreased body weight gain and visceral fat accumulation by reducing food intake but had no lasting beneficial effects on hypertriglyceridemia and hyperinsulinemia. Yet another rat study showed that it suppressed body fat accumulation but was toxic to the testes.
To try to make sense of the inconsistent results, Onakpoya et al. did a systematic review of the published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) as of 2011. Their analysis found a small, statistically significant difference in weight loss (1.75 kg vs 0.88 kg, less than 2 pounds). They commented that the studies all had methodological weaknesses, so these results could be due to GIGO (garbage in/garbage out). The two studies with the best methodology found no statistically significant difference from placebo. Adverse events were twice as common with Garcinia (headache, nausea, upper respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms). The authors concluded:
The evidence from RCTs suggests that Garcinia extracts/HCA generate weight loss on the short term. However, the magnitude of this effect is small, is no longer statistically significant when only rigorous RCTs are considered, and its clinical relevance seems questionable.
Oz featured a patient testimonial on the show from a woman who had lost 10 pounds in 4 months. She started noticing results after a week; she reported that her sugar cravings were decreased, she had more energy, and she went down a dress size from 10 to 8. She had no side effects. Says she was at a plateau and wanted a jump-start.
At this point, I don’t think we can reliably say whether Garcinia has a clinically relevant advantage over simple calorie reduction and exercise. It appears to be safe, and it may have a role in helping patients lose weight by assisting motivation and enlisting placebo effects.
Dr. Oz’s popularity is enduring, but diet fads aren’t. I confidently expect another “miracle” to supplant Garcinia in the Land of Oz in the not-too-distant future.
